Jesus Is Cool, But Christians Creep Me Out

Take a look at a book from David Foster entitled, A Renegade's Guide to God

Here are some excerpts from Chapter 2
"Jesus Is Cool, But Christians Creep Me Out -
Which Jesus Do You Know? Civilized Jesus, or Renegade Jesus?"

"...I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians.
Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
- Mohandas Gandhi

"...Jesus was born in a backwoods village...
He worked in obscurity in His father's
carpenter shop until he was thirty...He
walked everywhere He went and never
traveled more than two hundred miles
from the obscure village in which He was
born...He was famous for His constant
head-butting with the religious ruling
elite of His day...When it came to making
all the wrong people mad, He excelled...
He was seen as "every man's" champion
while at the same time He was feared and
hated by the religious elite. When the
winds of public opinion turned ill
against Him...His friends stepped into
the shadows...He went through the
mockery of an illegal trial...When He was
dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave
through the pity of a friend. Not quite
the resume' you'd expect for a religious
leader. Oh, by the way, did I mention
He rose from the dead? Now that's way
too cool and it makes all the difference.

"...Because Jesus was a revolutionary, plain
and simple, civilized Christianity tries
to clean Him up to make Him more
presentable. What we've ended up with is
Sweet Jesus in a box, the sole sustainer
and satisfier of my every wish and whim.
My job is to rip the lid off your God
box and let wild-loving, ever-living
Jesus loose on our sad and painful world
bringing hope and healing through His
grace and love. Jesus is dangerous
outside the box, and that's why
civilized religion wants His voice
muted and muffled.

"...I've actually had leaders in the
church say, "Now Dave, you can take
the Jesus thing too far." Too far?
How in God's name can we ever take
our loving, living redeemer of
all life too far? I say we haven't
even begun taking Him seriously
enough.

"...This may burst your bubble, but
here it is; Jesus wasn't sweet and
He isn't safe. He isn't the least
bit impressed with your big plans
or your political agenda...He is
not white and His native tongue is
not English. He is a jealous
lover and He does not abide
lukewarm love, and He will not
tolerate divided loyalty.

"...Decide for or against Jesus as
He is, but don't you dare dismiss
Him because we at times act like a
bunch of dweebs."

Wow, sounds like a good read! I was actually looking at your blogspot for a place to leave feedback or comments for Pastor Marlan. I wanted to comment on his teaching last Sunday June 21.
His comments on whispers and hearing the voice of God really guided me this morning as I was praying for direction. To become familiar with God's voice and how we hear Him is so incredibly important. I was despairing this week on what was going on in the world, and without knowing I took many depressing things to heart- crying out to God 'Why?' But then I realized discouraging and awful things are nothing new, it's how we trust in God to take care of us when they do is what matters.
I am praying that as I continue to grow in the Lord I will hear and recognize His voice when He speaks to me, and while praying I desire to know Him, not just to pray.
