A Bump On A Log

Certain Things make us feel uncomfortable. Like the Discussion of Money. Talk about Jesus or the use of certain unacceptable words in public. One of the uncomfortable discussions we can have as a church that calls ourselves Followers of Christ is about whether or not we are doing what we should be as compared to just nodding at the facts like we agree or are actually living the teachings we hear each week. This morning in my email I found a pertinent Daily Devotional from John Fischer. I would encourage you to read it and then click on the link to subscribe to his Daily Email called Catch of the day. Jump!

Three frogs are sitting on a log. One decides to jump down. How many are left? Three. He only decided he was going to jump. He didn't actually jump. Oh, he may have made a great decision. He might have even decided he was going to jump really far when he jumped down, or scream all the way and make a big deal of it. Or his decision may have come out of a good deal of soul searching. He might have been thinking: This time I'm really going to do this. I'm committing myself whole-heartedly to jumping off this log. This is it; there's no turning back now. But regardless of what he tells himself or how far he stretches this out, until he actually jumps, nothing has changed. He's still just a bump on a log.

A friend of mine often says that a decision without action is delusion. I've only deluded myself into thinking I've changed when I really haven't. The decision was only in my head.

Yesterday I wrote a catch about being a good listener to someone in his or her time of grief. After speaking with my sister upon the rapid decline and death of her husband, I was somewhat reluctant to keep calling. What do I say now? There are no words that can possibly reach this pain. That's when I realized, at the end of yesterday's Catch, that I could call my sister even if I didn't have anything to say to her, because I had realized the most important thing I could do for her is listen well. And I'm sure I gave the impression that the next thing I was going to do after writing that Catch was to pick up the phone and call her. But did I? No. You see I decided I could call her, I even decided I would call her, but I didn't actually call her.

I'm still only a bump on a log.

Jesus constantly talked about being doers of the word and not just hearers only. It was one of his major themes. It must have been important or he wouldn't have repeated it so much. We have lots of hearers in evangelical Christianity. Some of us have gotten so good at this, we could be known as professional hearers. We might even make a decision supported by going forward in a meeting and sealing our decision with a witness and a prayer. But until we do something about it, we are just a bunch of bumps on a log. Professional bumps—deluded bumps—but bumps nonetheless.

There's only one way off this log… Jump!

"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock… But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand." (Matthew 7:24 & 26)

Rusted and Weathered

I was in the local Wal-Mart a few days ago, just to get some razors and soap. It’s important to stay clean, Right? Anyway, I noticed an amazing array of products in what I call the forever young dept. The isles were filled with face soaps, lotions, washes, creams, gels, pastes and what looked like body putty filler. Huh! All guaranteed to do what no one can do. Keep you forever young! All it cost was a few dollars. Of course you will need daily, weekly or monthly applications so there is an ongoing cost. I’m not opposed to this stuff. I just find it humorous that everyone dies eventually and you can’t help but age. Yet every shelf seems to have the secret ingredient. I mean, did we really want to stay in the diaper stage or did we want to grow out of it? Did we really want to stay in high school or… okay I get it. We just want to look like we're still in high school.

Reading the bible I find nothing that speaks to the retention of youthful skin qualities. In fact, I find a lot that suggests we all must become rusted and weathered to become what we were intended to be.
1 Sam 16:7 says, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

We as humans put a lot of time, energy, creams and lotions into trying to preserve what won’t last because we prefer a less weathered exterior, but God prefers a weathering that produces a heart turned towards him.

Proverbs 31:3 says, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”
1 Timothy 4:8 says, “Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next.”

It’s not that any of these things are bad; in fact let me say “I am for them!” Dab, splash, brush or trowel it on. Do what ever it takes. Anything that keeps me from looking like a bicycle that has survived being handed down in a family of ten is an okay thing. It’s just that we miss something important when all we see is the way we were in our youth instead of focusing on what we are becoming.

In the last several years, in order to find time to clear my head from the daily events of life, I have taken interest in little trees, bonsai. What I find so interesting in them is that as an artist creates, trains and grows them into a visually stunning piece of art. It is all done with the inspiration of trees that have survived harsh elements and severe weathering. No one wants a bonsai that resembles a well groomed tree on a golf course. Everyone works to create trees that have stood the test of time. Trees that have weathered the storms have gained a unique beauty available to only the most persevering trees. God says the same thing about us!
First, in Psalms 139:14, he says we are “Fearfully and wonderfully made.”

He says it’s a process: 2 Cor. 3:18, “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord.”
He says its tough, but it has its rewards: Romans 5: 3-4 ,“Consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything”

Revelation 2:10 says, “But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.”
As we become transformed by God, we see the beauty in being rusted and weathered. We no longer fear what we can’t control. Instead, we find our true selves after the trials we endure and we find peace in our place in this world. One of my favorite verses says ,“We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them,” Romans 8:28.

Rusted and weathered is part of the journey. It has a beauty that cannot be copied, purchased or added by anything man can buy. It comes through time, struggle and a harsh environment. It’s only available to those who persevere. We are fearfully and wonderfully made!

Christmas Eve Service Cancelled

There is NO Christmas Eve Service. The weather is just not worth risking. Let me suggest you use the evening in other ways of worship -
• have devotions with your family in your pajamas, and then have a wonderful home-made dinner together around the table, or
• Build a snowman read your Bible and pray together - maybe even sing a little! Or
• just spend some time with God yourself -- reading, praying, and thinking so that you're ready for the opportunities of the coming year. Ask God to reveal what role you're to play in the Ironridge ministry. Begin taking the steps to get involved!

NOC in San Diego

The National outreach convention is on. This week I am manning the booth at the NOC with Dr. Randy Deal from Phoenix Arizona. Some great things here besides the weather! Randy is pastor of Rock Point church in Phoenix He has a great passion for God and making disciples. Besides that he is just fun to hang out with.

The second picture is me with Jon Lowry of Prison Fellowship. Check out their website to see what incredible things God is doing in the ministry to those in prison and how they are Transformed and brought back into the community. Jon stopped by the booth and as we talked he shared his incredible testimony of how God had led him from prison to ministering to gang members in Southern California. I was blown away by his story and yet knew I had met a brother in Christ. We have got to bring him to Ne Iowa to share what God is doing in his life!

Sometimes we can see ourselves as Superheroes or bearers of the truth. We may tend to think we are on the 'right side' rather than see ourselves as a people who need the message as much as anyone we will try to share it with. That simple little adjustment of our position in all of this makes the difference between us being used by God for his purposes or us using God for our purposes. Which position are you in?

We don't have to always defend ourselves...

Last week I made the statement that we don't always have to defend ourselves. Someone asked me this week about that. I told them that I see many people who spend vast amounts of time putting out the little fires that manifest themselves in the whispers of critics and that it only keeps them from doing what God has called them to do. I myself have things said about me that are painful and my urge is to defend or strikeback. However the only one that wins in those situations is Satan. Remember the bible says that Satan comes to "Kill, Steal and destroy" but Christ came to give life. Which life will you model? Here is a short video from Perry Noble of Newspring church, you might find it valuable in this discussion.

Perry Noble shares an important truth that many of us should visit today: We don't fight battles with people that claim to be Christian but don't like us". Why... quite simple: That is not our calling.

Have you been criticized by someone who doesn't know you? Have you been cut down from someone who has never attended your church? How about another church in town that doesn't agree with your style of ministry? Don't take on that battle... it's not your calling.

Bottom line: We can't control what other people say about us. But we can control how closely we stick to our calling of preaching the gospel.

WAUKON (KWWL) - An annual golf tournament lets players experience challenges of the blind.
The tournament was started by Tom Phipps who lost his sight 15 years ago. He loves to play golf, and wants to help others, so he started a golf tournament that raises money for the Lion's Club.
"If we have people who can't afford eye glasses, we help pay for those, the eye exam, and the glasses," says Gerald Schroedel, Lion's Club President.
"They're finding out how I golf and the challenge of the handicapped people," says Phipps. "The way the economy is right now, a lot of these kids just can't afford eye glasses, eye exams."
"I don't know what I'd do if I went blind, it's definitely hard," says Lonnie Byrnes, blindfolded golfer.
The blindfolded golfers were assisted by their partners.
"The money goes to a good cause, it's fun to be out here and do this and it's fun to see what it's like through somebody else's eyes, so to speak," said Byrnes.
"This really gives people an idea just what blind people go through," said Schroedel.
Now in its 9th year, more than 50 players tried golfing blindfolded, raising $1,000 dollars for the Lion's Club.
"It's really been a great tournament and I hope it keeps getting bigger and bigger," said Phipps.

God is continuing to rock my world on my journey through Acts…here are a few things that are standing out to me personally.

* The church had to let go of the comfortable and the familiar in order to fully follow Jesus and advance HIS Gospel.
* The church was passionately obsessed with seeing more and more people come to faith in Christ.
* The message of the church was Jesus…nothing political or social, they didn’t try to legislate morality…simply Jesus!
* God kept raising up gifted leaders who were willing to embrace their calling…one group of people were not expected to do it all…and when people embraced God’s calling on their lives–the church grew!
* The people in the church were willing to work hard AND beg God to intervene on their behalf.

Time for a New Look

The last few weeks we have been talking about seeing God in all we do. This series has been very challenging to me along with the Crazy Love study we are doing. So out with the old and in with the new is what God is doing in our hearts. So i decided to make a change on the blog look as well. Hope you like it! it is a little wider and seemingly a fresher look.

Ironridge Internship

I would like to introduce you to one of our interns at Ironridge. This year we will have several interns who will be going through an intense ministry internship to prepare them for ministry. You will see them in new avenues as they begin to seek God's direction for them in ministry. We are excited to see this calling in their lives and have them as a part of the Ironridge team.

Bryan Mincks as many of you may know him is a part of Ironridge but recently has sought God's leading as to his direction in ministry as what God has planned for his future.

So you want to take a glimpse into my mind? OK, you asked for it! I'm a movie lover and have way too many, that I have watched way too many times. I've spent a great part of my life in front of people whether it be in plays, speech or on-stage Sunday mornings and I've loved every minute of it. I enjoy entertaining people. I have a pet Pug named Gizmo and enjoy spending my free time with my girlfriend Angela. Most people you meet that know me can tell you that there is never a dull moment and with Gods help I plan on keeping it that way. This is starting to sound like a bad dating bio so I am going to move on. I've been involved with ministry my whole life. I came to Christ at a young age and have since then been involved in many facets of the church. My first church was Grace Fellowship where I took part in youth group, became an AWANA leader and eventually took part in the Sunday Mornings as a singer. As I got older I participated in a ministry out of Chicago and eventually became a leader. In helping create this ministry from the ground up, I learned how to play the djembe (a large African drum), became a barista aka Coffee Maker and was able to take two mission trips to the Bahamas. Once my family moved to Waukon to plant a church, I became heavily involved with Ironridge taking on any responsibility my father would throw at me. I have since then been leading worship every Sunday and taking care of the many technical problems that come our way sometimes! I am excited to see God move through this ministry in a way that we aren't expecting. I've seen the potential this group of believers has and can not wait to be part of how God will use us.

Midwest Mission 11th annual Graduation Banquet

The Midwest Mission is holding its 11th annual graduation banquet April 18th at the Expo center in the Cresco Fairgrounds. Many of the 13 missions nationwide
will have representation at the banquet. It is a great time of fellowship
for graduates and their families that come from all over the US to
celebrate the transformation of their son, daughter, husband, wife or loved
one that comes from accepting Christ. The meal is fantastic. It is
catered and even the residents get waited on. So join us for an evening of great food and thanking God for all he has done in so many lives.

Impacting Our World

As a part of the Ministry of Ironridge and GFC's ministry we impact the world by supporting church planting globally. This week I am leading the Converge USA Assessment Center in Orlando which is held at the Campus Crusade Campus. 16 couples and 1 single are being assessed for future church planters. These people will start churches all over the US that will bring the life changing message of Christ to many new followers. This is pastor Mark Bjorlo from Brainerd Minnesota. He is taking part in the assessment this week as an assessor. Other assessors include Larry Szyman from Wisconsin and Bill Downing from Ventura California. 18 assessors and 5 team members have taken part in the Assessment this week.

The history of Bill bright who was a candy man and his dream of impacting the world for Christ has led to the largest mission organization with over a quarter of a million staff members. How Do I Hear God’s Voice?

Recently I have had this discussion with several people. There always seems to be so much mystique about this subject. Depending on your background or where you are at in your walk with Christ you may struggle with this whole issue. So many make this a tough thing and literally freeze from doing anything for fear that they will be out of God's will. Is that God's plan that we live so cautiously? I don't see that anywhere in the bible. Then there is the group that always whispers when it comes to God's will and hearing his voice as if it is more of a spiritual seance than a relationship. Is that what hearing his voice is like ? Where are the people that risk it all and see God show up? Where are the people that hear his voice and make a difference in the lives of those Christ has called us to reach?

I found this article by Perry Noble that I think clears up a lot of the thoughts on Hearing God's voice. Check it out

Often when I am speaking I will say something like, “I felt the Lord say to me…” AND, just as often as I make that comment I will have someone ask me, “How do you hear God’s voice?”

Let me be very clear…I’ve never heard Him speak audibly to be…I am quite sure I would crap my pants if that happened! BUT…I did want to share four ways that I believe the Lord speaks…at least I know He has used these ways in my life…

#1 - God’s Word

God speaks LOUDLY through His Word…it is living and active (Hebrews 4:12)…and NO ONE that I’ve ever met has screwed up their lives by submitting their lives to the Scriptures.

God’s Word IS God’s will…and I believe more people would hear His voice if they would stop asking Him to say what they want Him to say…and spend some time focusing on what He’s already said!

#2 - God’s Spirit

The Bible is clear that the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside a believer at the moment of salvation. (Jesus talked about this a lot in John 14-16.)

Growing his Kingdom

Ironridge Church became a reality almost 5 years ago. Since that time we have seen the impacted lives of many people. We have seen the Trunk or treat outreach we do every year grow to over 600 people. We have heard the testimony's of many as to how God has used Ironridge to impact their lives and we have come together as a family when someone very dear to us passed away and the whole community witnessed what God is doing through this new church. We moved from using the school auditorium to purchasing the Main Feature Theater and Pizza pub where we now meet on Sundays. All these things and many more have taken place since Ironridge hit the ground 5 years ago.

Since day one when I sat with the then school superintendent Omar Troyer and asked the question "What do the people of this community need" and he replied "A vision beyond themselves". You have heard me say that Ironridge will affect the lives of thousands of people in NE Iowa, The United States and even around the world! I still believe it. Now because of God bringing the people and resources and a new relationship with a Church and village Creek camp the pieces seem to be assembling by Gods hand.

We are seeing the picture of many communities around us where God may lead us to start churches associated with Ironridge to impact the lives of thousands. It is possible. I see it and I am following God to reveal it. Pray with me for the expansion of his kingdom around us. So that many come to know him and see their lives changed by his power. Ask God where and how he might use you in this. It will take a team, a family, the Church willing to follow his call on there lives to accomplish it.

How will the church function in a world that is ever changing it's methods of communication and movement?

I think it is even more possible for the church to Connect, Ignite and Transform when it follows Christ as he reaches the peoples of this ever changing World. WE (Ironridge) can impact the world in huge ways unlike ever before. God is not small and to catch up to where he is. We must think God sized thoughts. He knew all of this would happen and he is prepared for it. Are we? Arizona Converge USA Assessment Center

Last week was spent directing the Converge USA Assessment Center Held in Chandler Arizona. It was held by a group of great churches in the Southwest Converge District. The way we were treated was inspiring to say the least! Cornerstone Church in Chandler was the site and what we saw from them was nothing short of stunning, even the weather was spectacular, 72 and sunny. I missed out on the mind numbing cold that the Midwest was experiencing.

Pastor Linn Winters and the staff from the church displayed amazing servant hearts throughout the week. The day of arrival we were given gift cards for the bookstore or coffee shop for $15. The second day gift cards of $25. The following day the candidates were giving credit cards for Dinner out or shopping. The entire week was filled with incredible stories of God's providence in the lives of the people we met.

The Southwest district of Converge Hosted the assessment because of their passion to see new churches started, resulting in the impacted lives of thousands through the life changing message of Jesus Christ. We thank all of them for making this possible.
Every Assessment Center includes lots of food. Just so happens in Phoenix there is a Starbucks within a few blocks of anywhere you may be. That is always the right way to start the morning.
The AC also includes lots of work. If you take part in one you can expect four days of hard work. However the rewards of serving in this capacity that will touch so many lives and lead so many to Christ through new churches starting is humbling. Through the Assessment Center you get to see what 'New Things' God is up to and so many of the people he is using.

Even with all the work it takes you will learn as you take part in the process. Many have shared how they have returned home with greater passion to plant churches.

We won't wear you out too bad. There are still chances to catch up on your rest. It may be in the busy entryway of the church , but like Tony here. You have got to catch a little shut eye when you get the chance.

Okay, try something different. read this article from the bottom up. Its pretty early in the morning here and I just realizes I wrote it upside down.

In my next article tomorrow i will share more with you about Cornerstone. There is much we can learn from them.

Keeping The Passion

Sometimes in our Spiritual journey we can feel as if all of the fun has gone out of it. Yet the depth of our journey is not marked by the fun of it but rather the passion you have for it. So how do you stay passionate for the things of God?
Here are something’s I do over time:
1. Make a prayer journal. That is, what am I asking God for and what is he leading me to? Writing it down easily allows me to look back and see what prayers God has answered. It is easy to forget. Our minds are distracted by many new directions and we can fail to see that God has been answering us all along.
2. Develop friendships with those who don’t know Christ. Caring about people who don’t know Christ will help you stay closer to him yourself.
3. Time to Pray. One of the first things that goes when you get busy or stressed is talking to God. If I do not stay in touch with and talk to my wife our relationship suffers. It is the same way with God.
4. Give. Give something today. Time, a note of encouragement, a check, a hug, a thank you. When we give we get release from the weight we carry. Doesn’t make sense in our world, but God is the giver of all things.
5. Take a look at the lives of those around you. I often read the obituaries or sometimes just take a stroll through a cemetery. It helps me keep my perspective. We won’t live here forever. Few things are as bad as they seem and God has a plan for us.

This Sunday December 14th we will begin a new series entitled Advent Conspiracy. It will be a challenge to us to take part in changing the world. when Ironridge Church began over 4 years ago I said that we would impact the world. I still believe it!
God is growing and positioning us to impact the world. I believe that he is leading us to make a huge difference in the lives of so many in Northeast Iowa, city after city, town after town. I still believe that he will supply all of our needs to impact our world. If you find that hard to believe join us in our new series Advent conspiracy. Maybe our prayers in these times of economic downturn should be, "God give me more Faith". "God help me to believe". Nobody's home

Last night we took a drive down town. I was surprised by how close you can get to the white house. It was cold and no one was inviting us in. The guards at the gate even seemed glad to be inside a temperature controlled building. I am amazed at what a great country we live in. The history of a nation born out of struggle for independence can be seen in just a few blocks. The buildings built of stone are a tribute to our nations ability to believe that there is a bright future ahead. With so much going on in our country right now. The tendency can be to believe that the best is behind us. When really we may need to readjust our reasons for calling ourselves Americans. It seemed that no one was home,so we just took a couple pictures and headed to Mr. Smiths in Georgetown. Mr. Smith's was a cool little bar/restaurant that is a local hangout for the college crowd. It's also just a few blocks from a home that Jackie Kennedy used to retreat from the White House.

Trunk Or Treat Was A Great Success

Trunk Or Treat was a huge success last night. We estimated that over 800 people took part in it. What a great opportunity to make our church known and to serve so many people in our community. We made an impression on many people, that we would do such a thing and not charge for it. I mean after all normal people charge for their cotton candy. But you can't accuse us of being normal. In fact we are like everyone else on a journey to discover our purpose in life. We also know that God is working in our midst and that we serve him by serving others.
Consider this week inviting someone to Ironridge. We hold a message inside us that is more valuable than any other in the world. Sharing that message can bring real life change. Together in community we can change what others think will never change. Not because of us, but because of who lives in us. Hope to see you at Ironridge Sunday!

Go Team!

Last night a new team at Ironridge met. It is called the 'Go Team" it is built around the truth that God wants all of us to become active in the work that he is doing.

1 Peter 4:10-11 says: Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer. Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God's words; if help, let it be God's hearty help. That way, God's bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he'll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes!

We have an amazing opportunity before us to see things happen that we only dream about. We must not lose heart but instead all become a part of what God is doing and the impossible will become possible right before our eyes. Don't let another day pass before you join "The Go Team". We are preparing ourselves to work together to see lives changed! My friends that is the mark of an alive church. Nothing is impossible when we follow God's lead.

The only added expense will be your dinner Friday night and again on Saturday night. We will be stopping to eat at Culvers in Rochester on the way home Saturday night.

We will leave at 5:30 a.m. Friday from the fairgrounds in Waukon to attend the pre-conference from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (I Second that Emotion; speakers, Jan Silvious, Patsy Clairmont & Anita Renfroe) and then the Infinite Grace 2008 conference begins Fri evening from 7-9:30 p.m. and continues from 9-5 p.m. on Saturday. We return to Waukon Fair grounds around 10 PM Saturday night. The bus will be stopping in Decorah to pick up and drop off as well.

Monday afternoon I will be at Luther College in Decorah Iowa to do a Strengths finder training for one of the departments there. Now Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham and Donald Clifton, both researchers at the Gallup Organization. Developed The tool which the premise of the tool is to effectively manage personnel, the best approach is to focus on enhancing people's strengths rather that try and eliminate their weaknesses. The authors have analyzed results of interviews conducted by Gallup of over 1.7 million employees from 101 companies and representing 63 countries, resulting in the formulation of 34 positive personality traits. StrengthsFinder is a talent assessment instrument developed expressly for the Internet. It is built upon three primary discoveries that resulted from decades of research of successful human beings. Skills can be learned, and knowledge can be obtained. However, talent – the key to strength and peak performance – must exist naturally within a person. A talent is a naturally recurring pattern of thought, feeling, or behavior that can be productively applied. They are spontaneous, top-of-mind, perhaps even subconscious, reactions to situations. Talents are what one does well “without even thinking about it.” They are innate, non-teachable.

This Sunday we will take a look at the most revolutionary thought to mankind,ever. Growing up I had an aunt around the house and her name was Grace. Consequently every time I heard the Priest talk about Grace I assumed he knew my aunt. He had a lot of good things to say about her and I wondered at times if he were talking about the same Aunt I knew. It was years later in the midst of a huge life change that I began to discover the magnitude of the word Grace. It was no longer just the name of my aunt. No longer just something we said at the table before dinner. It was now the love language of a God that had the power to overcome everything in my life and the world around me. As you will see over the next few weeks "Grace" permeates everything we are and do. All that we have done or will do. It is the most revolutionary thought mankind has ever come across. Risk and Fear

Sunday we discovered the need for risk in our lives as we follow Christ. In short we discovered three steps to deal with the fear it may bring.

1. Define your fear. What is it that you are afraid of? Rather than just a feeling that is overwhelming you, putting a name on it is the first step.

2. Tell someone what you are afraid of. Sharing your fears with someone else brings another perspective to the situation. Like a child crying out in the night for its parents we too need someone to bring a positive power to our fears.

3. Take baby steps to overcome your fears. Pray then Move! Do not just allow yourself to be overwhelmed but move forward by trusting that God will care for you as you walk in the way he has for you.

As a kid I can remember this movie coming out. For a long time none of the kids in my neighborhood would even take a bath. There is something about fear. It overtakes us. Heightens all of our senses and wham we are no longer in the driver seat. Instead we do things we would not otherwise do. What is fear? How do we deal with it? What does God have to say about it? Converge USA Assessment center

This week I was Directing The Converge USA Assessment center held in Green Lake Wisconsin. We Had 22 Couples who were being assessed for the 16 building building blocks that are necessary for a church Planter to have. It is a privilege for me to be a part of a ministry that has the potential to see new churches started all over America. Many Times whether from visitors at Ironridge or members, friends of ours or family we get asked "where can we find a church like Ironridge in our area". It is this Ministry Converge USA Assessment centers that helps church planters be able to start new churches all over the country so that people just like you can find a church that will help them discover God's purpose for them. Our Church is an active supporter of this very important Church planting ministry.

Village Creek Bible Camp

I'd like to introduce you to Tom Treptau. Tom and his wife Cammie are the directors of Village Creek Bible Camp just outside of Waukon. Last Sunday we held our Ironridge Baptism at the camp and Tom gave us a tour of their new dining hall being built. If you have never met Tom or Cammie introduce yourself at Ironridge Sunday. The ministry they are doing at Village creek is phenomenal and has a kingdom minded mission. God is using this family and all associated with the camp greatly.

This week I will be traveling to Lompoc California to perform the wedding of Tony Siminski & Jess Lewis. Trevor And I will fly in to LA Thursday morning and head north to Lompoc via the Ventura Highway. The wedding is Friday afternoon. We will fly back to Iowa Saturday morning.

Sunday at Ironridge we will be looking at finishing up the series on Filling our tanks. Following the service we will head out to Village Creek Camp for a Baptism Celebration. we have several people being baptized and everyone is welcome to make that decision in their spiritual journey to proclaim Christ in this way. So come on along. Bring some dry clothes to change into or just come to be part of the celebration and see the camp. It is an incredible camp right here in Northeast Iowa.

There will be a potluck following the Baptism so bring something to share and expect a great time!

Baptism is a step in your spiritual growth

Following our Sunday morning service we will have a potluck and Baptism at Village creek Bible Camp. We encourage all of those who have made a personal decision to follow Christ to take this opportunity to deepen their walk with Christ.
I was baptized as an infant and when I was 26 made the decision to become a Christ follower. Later that year I was baptized and what a powerful symbol it was of my obedience to God.

Baptism is a symbol of the salvation that has already taken place in your life! Baptism does not save you, only faith in Jesus Christ alone saves.

Baptism is an outward sign that a person has entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ. It symbolizes what takes place inwardly at the time of salvation:
• Acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
• Sharing in His death (our old sin nature died) and resurrection (we became a new creation in Christ).
• Being symbolically washed clean.

Because Jesus instructed us to be baptized, baptism is also an act of obedience. While it is not necessary for salvation, it demonstrates submission to God.

A good way to understand baptism is to look at a wedding ring. A wedding ring is worn by people who’ve committed their life in marriage to their mate. The ring doesn’t make them married but shows a reality (their marriage) that has already taken place, and so it is with baptism. Baptism doesn’t save you. It shows your salvation in Jesus Christ has taken place.

At Ironridge Church we baptize those who want to be baptized. It should be an opportunity to make known to others your desire to follow Christ. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the impact that following Christ has had on your life and a testimony to many. I would love to talk to you about this decision in your life.

Sunday we had a Full house at Ironridge. It was a special Sunday with the dedication of Darrin and Marlene Lonning's two Boys Carson & Raleigh. We invited many people to come forward and pray for these two young men and to commit themselves to support the family through the years in Christs love. What an awesome day! We are so blessed to be a part of what God is doing in this young families life and we are looking forward to growing together in community with them. Remember them in your prayers.

New Wine

Jammed in between the asphalt driveway and the cement foundation of our house, grows a cactus native to Colorado high deserts. Now he’s a long way from home. I planted it there four years ago when we moved to Waukon. I realized that starting a church would be a tough thing and that for this cactus to grow in such a less than ideal situation would also be tough. He would be my partner. He and I kind of have a relationship. At least as far as a person can relate to a plant. Every year I watch him. I pull weeds from around him and make sure he has all the sun the summer can provide.

I don’t think most would have given him a chance. Waukonian’s don’t see many cacti around none the less see them grow. But it’s a new thing. New things are sometimes met with skepticism or even unbelief. Those who don’t see the value in a cactus in Iowa just write him off. “Why would there be a cactus in Iowa?” “Cacti are not supposed to grow here.” “Why would anyone want a cactus?” But none the less the little guy winter after winter has continued to grow. From one barrel head to now over 16. Storms, floods, baking sun, standing next to hot asphalt and dark winters buried in feet of snow.

Yesterday, he did something completely unexpected. He blossomed. Produced fruit! All his hard work and determination in a dry, weary land has produced fruit, beauty. Regardless of what anyone ever said, he kept going. He endured. He matured. And everyone who sees him today says, “Wow! Isn’t that beautiful?” “Incredible! A cactus in Iowa! Where can I get one?”

The Bible tells us God is doing a “New Thing.” It says he can’t pour new wine into an old wine skin. We are being prepared to produce great things. We must endure, stand our ground, and be ourselves. Let God change us and use us. In due time, He will lift us up and everyone that passes by will say, “Wow! That’s amazing! In Iowa! In Waukon! It must be a God Thing.”

If you haven’t checked out Ironridge church, maybe you should. You will find a young growing community of Christians that realize they are not perfect, but are pressing forward to discover God’s plan for them. Together we will grow. Weather the storms. Believe in each other and that God is working in our midst. And we will in due time, blossom, to the benefit of all of those around us.

Baby Dedication

The Bible says that a baby is a blessing from God. When you decide to dedicate your son or daughter, you are acknowledging the awesome responsibility God has given you in raising your child. A baby dedication is a ceremony that expresses your desire as parents to raise your son or daughter in the ways of the Bible and to ask God to use your son or daughter for his purposes. You submit your will for your child to His will.

Why should I dedicate my infant?
The Bible provides an example for this in that Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to the temple to be dedicated to God. As followers of Christ, we want to also make this public declaration to your family, and your church. It is invaluable to be able to tell a child as they are growing up that they belong to Jesus and that you have asked God to use them in a formal declaration, i.e. Baby Dedication.

Sunday June 29th we will have a Dedication during our Sunday morning Service. Following is a Letter From Darrin and Marlene Lonning about this great event!

God wants us to talk to him. He wants us to hear from him. Thats what a relationship is built on. He can deal with our anger, our fears, our pride. The only thing he can't deal with is our silence. The Bible tells us that "we have not because we ask not."

Four Principles Of Prayer

1. Prayer can do anything God can do ... and since God can do anything, prayer is omnipotent

2. When we fail to Talk to God. We leave out the only one that can change our situation

3. Nothing of eternal importance is ever accomplished without prayer

4. The Sum Total of what we are is directly related to the depth of our prayers.
